This was truly an amusing, entertaining story; well written and fun to read. I closed the book with a smile on my face. Who wouldn't love this??
An entertaining look at life. Written with humor and insight into the human condition. I laughed out loud more than once. Mr. Elliott is a clever writer and I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
This tome strikes the nail on the head, cross-cuts to the chase, and by NO means, lumbers through a particularly painful process many of us have endured as new homeowners. Mr. and Mrs. Elliott's hilarious experiences had me chuckling out loud. A gifted and prolific humorist, Elliott spares no energy in reliving, save retelling, this amazing tale. This fun and easy read is filled with colorful characters Paul the contractor DUDE! Each and every page speaks to perseverance in the rural wilds of the American west. You GOTTA read this little book. Chas Elliott is IN THE HOUSE!
I read Countryfied Chickens several weeks ago and since then my wife and I have moved. Much of what Elliot tells in this book we experienced over the recent weeks. I hope that we will be able to look back on our experience with the same kind of humor and light-heartedness that Elliot expresses in the telling of their experience.
It's not only a great read, but it will keep you smiling and even laughing. Elliot may not have much mechanical ability in his DNA, but he does have a natural ability to write in his DNA. I thoroughly enjoyed this little book and will be re-reading it.
With fun illustrations and a casual journalistic writing style, Chas Elliot offers essays on the delights of late home loans, home inspectors, absent moving guys, excess yard work and more in his new book, Countryfied Chickens. The country is the wilds of Washington, and the chickens are moving from sunny San Diego. Do they know it's going to rain?
"Don't ever move," says the author at number 10 in his "Top 10 Lessons" at the end of the book. But if you have to move, if you can't resist the lure of grandkids or the needs of grandparents, this will be a fun book to make you believe that your removal disaster tale can't possibly be the worst in the world. Or it might be the book to make you change your mind and obey rule number 10.
Beloved (or otherwise) characters and themes repeat during these essays, making this a great book to pick up and book down when your upcoming move gives you time to read. Browse it for a particular chapter--pre-approved for a loan? Don't miss Hostage Crisis. Looking forward to countryside driving? Read Deer Roulette first. Learn how to avoid the mistake of accepting the wrong choice of home inspector, and remember, the rules on Guns and Religion might be different somewhere else.
Essays cover not just the move, but also the culture shock of country living, of miles and dollars to get into town for the next week's shopping, of Walmart stores with space to walk around, "Costco rehab," and acreage. The reading's fun, all told with a pleasing tone, like sitting on the porch with friends, and I'd love to read more by this author.

This is a very light read,but nonetheless there is so much truth built into Elliott's book,that anyone contemplating such a downsizing move,especially to a small town, should take heed.It is a short book of only 89 pages,including large print,several full page illustrations and a lot of "white space".I grew up in a small town of about 5,000,and Chas hits the nail on the head.All he has to say about putting your home "on the market",dealing with the Real Estate industry,the Mortgage companies and banks,the Inspection gurus,the moving companies ,decorating and repair expenses and everything else involved will result in not ending up with a nest age when sizing down,but rather a lining the pockets and feathering the nests of all those vultures who'll be waiting in line to pick your bones as clean as a roadkill on the highway.Yes ,you'll end up sized down but ,but have little or nothing to show for it.
Then there's the whole idea of "moving to a small town ,or in the country,to get away from it all".What Elliott says is all true,.The little town where I grew up hasn't changed in population in nearly 100 years.Why?For the simple reason that finding work,starting new businesses,is very tough and the young move away as soon as an opportunity occurs.
While there are downsides to large cities and suburbs,the advantages far outstrip the disadvantages.I've often talked to people who have grown up,lived and worked in large centers and said they wish they could get out of all the conjestion and move to a small town.They rarely do,and I've never known anyone who lived in small towns ever returning,once they left,or even suggesting they would like to.
